Is an AI generated headshot a good option?
You’ve heard it from me before, in today's digital-first world, your professional image is often the first impression you make. But with the rapid rise of AI technology, a new question emerges: Should you opt for an AI-generated headshot or stick with a traditional professional portrait? Let's dive into this intriguing comparison and explore what it means for business professionals and marketers alike.
While I’ve never been an early adapter of technology, neither am I a luddite. I have to admit, AI-generated headshots have come a long way. They can rival professional photos in terms of sharpness and clarity. However, there's an intangible quality to professional portraits that AI struggles to replicate. Just what is that quality you ask? Well, it just so happens to one of my core principles, dare I say my raison d’etre? Yes, I dare. That quality is the spark of human connection. Ahh, connection. Isn’t that just what we all really want?
AI also gets low marks on creativity and empathy. Although, according to an AI generated ‘Overview’ on this topic, it’s working on mimicking empathy and goes on to say, AI’s creativity is systematic and consumer-driven, while human creativity is often impulsive and self-driven. Good. To. Know.
“A great portrait is not just about how you look, it’s about how you feel”
As a professional photographer, the skill I value most is my ability to make you feel at ease in front of the camera, bringing out genuine expressions that truly represent your personality. While AI can create a perfect smile, it may miss the subtle nuances that make you, well, you. A professional photographer excels at capturing micro-expressions and natural poses that convey confidence and approachability.
The Ethical Dilemma: Real vs. Artificial
It's crucial to consider the ethical implications of using AI-generated images for professional purposes. Is it misleading to use an AI headshot that may not perfectly represent your actual appearance? I recently had a client, Sandy, who started a new coaching business in 2024. She said, “Projecting a professional image, demonstrating authenticity, building trust are critical. I knew my AI photo wasn’t going to cut it anymore. My daughter was the one who pointed out that she could tell it was an AI generated image and that my eyes just looked strange. Wow!”
Food for thought: How would you feel if you discovered a colleague's profile picture was AI-generated? Would it change your perception of them?

“They were interesting, they were fine, but they just weren’t ME”
Counting the Cost: Pixels vs. Paychecks
Let's talk numbers. Professional portrait sessions can range from $100 to $1000+, depending on the photographer's expertise and the package you choose. In contrast, AI-generated headshots can cost as little as $5-$20 per image, with some services offering unlimited generations for a monthly fee.
The cost savings of AI headshots could be a game-changer. However, larger corporations might prioritize the personalized touch and consistency of professional photography for their executive team.
Ultimately, I wanted to do my own research. After a few general questions about hair color and age, the AI generator asked me to upload a minimum of 6 good selfies from the waist up. Sandy told me she had uploaded over 40 photos! As I scrolled through the thousands of photos on my phone, I could not find 6 images that fit the criteria. No sunglasses, not hats, no other people, etc, and I didn’t feel like paying the $40 bucks to satisfy my curiosity. I did however try the free, one image required option on Canva. See result below. I’ll file this one under ‘You Get What You Pay For’ ( ;

Is a Personal Brand Photoshoot Right for You? 3 Questions to Ask Yourself
Whether you're a seasoned entrepreneur, or embarking on a new career path, a personal brand photoshoot might just be your next step. So, let's begin by asking three essential questions to help you decide if this exciting journey is right for you.
1. Are you ready to become visible?
A personal brand photoshoot is the chance to capture the essence of who you are and what you do. It's not just about pretty pictures; it's about creating a visual story that resonates with your audience. Think about it – when you see a photo that speaks to you, it's like a connection is made, a bridge is built. Do you want to have photos that showcase YOUR energy, values, and style? Would you like to work with a photographer that genuinely understands what you’d like to convey, and knows how to guide you to capture it? If you're nodding your head in agreement, let's move on to the next question.
2. Do you have a service to share or a key project you’re getting ready to launch?
If you’re like me, you may want to focus more on your clients and less on yourself. Many people I work with have a well-earned level of expertise, and a service or product that can be so beneficial to potential clients, yet, they are uncomfortable putting themselves ‘out there’. You can’t help people who don’t know you exist!
Professional, engaging, custom photography makes it easy when launching new offers or creating ‘evergreen’ content for your website, newsletters and social media. You will feel confident in the messages being conveyed, and the story being shared in images that show what you have to offer anytime someone finds you online or gets referred to you. Never cringe or have to explain your outdated online presence again! A picture truly is worth a thousand words, so be sure it’s the right words. A personal brand photoshoot isn't just a photoshoot; it's a powerful way to own your narrative.
3. Are you ready to stop waiting?
Life changes when you stop waiting. There is no perfect time, or number on the scale that you need to get to, before you can share your service and create the life you desire. Life is NOW. I promise it’s not as scary as you think! You don’t even need to know how to do it, because that’s how I can help you! Together, we will discover how to tell your unique story through pictures.
So, my friend, if your heart is screaming "YES," then what are you waiting for? Let's capture the magic that is uniquely you. Because in the end, it's not just about the pictures; it's about the journey, the growth, and the feeling of saying, “Let’s do this!”
What Is Personal Branding Photography?
Branding photography is a way to promote your business, your brand, and what you offer. It is a tool to showcase who you are and what you can do for potential clients before you ever meet them.
Personal Brand photography is a way to define what you offer with your business, your brand, and yourself. It is a tool to showcase who you are, what you do, and how you do it to potential clients before you ever meet them. According to Nahla Davies, strong personal brands have these things in common;
Consistency. Consistent in its tone, offerings, and authenticity.
Positivity. No personal brand can be successful if it is pessimistic.
Helpful. The last shared note between these personal brands is an attitude of helpfulness. Each brand has something to offer prospective readers, users, shoppers, or consumers.
The 5 Types of Branding Images
During a Personal Brand photo shoot with me, here are the types of photographs you can expect;
The Headshot- this is your “about” photo.
The Environment- What does it look like to work with you? The point of view is from the client to YOU. What is it like, and how might it feel from their perspective.
The Lifestyle- How is your brand reflected in your daily life? These images are aspirational and inspirational. They showcase you living your brand message.
The Details- Visually engaging images and supporting photos that you can use on your social media, website, or any online platform that you use to connect to your clientele. Eye catching and scroll stopping! These images will invite engagement for stories you can tell about your services.
The Unexpected. Some say “candid”, I prefer “unplanned”. We always create a shoot plan before the session to ensure that we get all of the important images, however, I also allow for FREEDOM and INSPIRATION during the photo session for those unexpected moments to shine through! These photos are magical, enthralling, and unexpectedly visually compelling.
“Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but about the stories you tell.”
Planning a Branding Session though Stories
“Stories” are collections of images that dive into the heart and soul of your brand. This really is your WHY. It’s also the way your business that will most authentically connect with clients. We will structure your session based on the stories you want to share. This will be our creative guide.
Sometimes clients are not sure which stories to tell or how to show them. No worries! This is BIG PART of what I offer you in my photography service. Prior to the session, you will complete a questionnaire that helps me to understand the unique offering of your business. Sometimes we uncover hidden gems that really help your message shine.
Take a look at my client and friend, Jennifer Kim. Jennifer is a certified professional business life coach. Her branding session was deigned to showcase her and her business, Balanced Path Coaching.
Jenifer loves engaging with clients. In person and remotely!
Quality time with family is hugely important in her balanced lifestyle message.
Jennifer preaches the importance of self-care and balance in life. Physical activity is important to her lifestyle.
Relaxation is also a key component for a balanced life. Shown here with her pup that has a very special story to tell!
In all of these images, a different story is being told, but they all relate back to Jennifer and her brand. She how she tells stories with these images on her Instagram!

Why You Should Invest in Professional Headshots…Just a Reminder
I know you already know this, but let’s go over it anyway! The way you present yourself online matters, no matter what industry you’re in.
A professional headshot gives potential customers or employers an initial glimpse into who you are as a person and professional. Your headshot should be an accurate representation of what you look like every day; nothing fancy or over-the-top. Your headshot should feature you looking happy, confident, and approachable. Additionally, it should match the overall aesthetic of your website design.
When potential customers or employers are viewing your website and social media pages, the first thing they’ll notice is how you look. That’s why it’s essential to invest in a professional headshot for your website, social links, and personal branding—to make a positive impression on those who visit your page.
Did you know the ‘About’ page is the most visited page on a website after the home page?
I promise to guide you to a photo you will love and feel great about sharing.
A good photo creates trustworthiness while also improving customer relationships before any introductions have been made. Not only will it give people a great first impression when they land on your page but it will also help create consistency across multiple platforms while boosting credibility for the services or products that you offer. So don't be afraid to take that extra step towards creating an amazing online presence—you won't regret it!
Oh, the places we can go to make photographs
A few locations to take photographs in and nearby Issaquah, Wa
Here we are again in that most wonderful time of year for outdoor photographs! While I do love exploring and discovering new vistas, we are so lucky to have some great options all around us. Here are a few nearby favorites…
Front Street, Issaquah
Great for Senior Sessions! A short walk from the train depot to the historic Hailstone Feed Store and Shell Station yields lots of visually interesting options.
Confluence Park, Issaquah
Bridge, trees, foliage!
Central Park,
Issaquah Highlands
This is one of my favorite spots! From families to seniors to engagements, it always works!
Lake Sammamish
State Park
Another great spot for everyone. Don’t forget your Discover Pass!
Luther Burbank Park,
Mercer Island
Venturing just a few miles west from home base, this park provides all the PNW feels and more.
Snoqualmie, Wa
…and if we head east just up the road a bit, we’ve got views of Mt Si and more, maybe even the famous herd of elk! (Don’t get too close!)
Of course I can’t leave out our famous falls, plus the depot is right down the road for a variety of looks!
