Is an AI generated headshot a good option?
/You’ve heard it from me before, in today's digital-first world, your professional image is often the first impression you make. But with the rapid rise of AI technology, a new question emerges: Should you opt for an AI-generated headshot or stick with a traditional professional portrait? Let's dive into this intriguing comparison and explore what it means for business professionals and marketers alike.
While I’ve never been an early adapter of technology, neither am I a luddite. I have to admit, AI-generated headshots have come a long way. They can rival professional photos in terms of sharpness and clarity. However, there's an intangible quality to professional portraits that AI struggles to replicate. Just what is that quality you ask? Well, it just so happens to one of my core principles, dare I say my raison d’etre? Yes, I dare. That quality is the spark of human connection. Ahh, connection. Isn’t that just what we all really want?
AI also gets low marks on creativity and empathy. Although, according to an AI generated ‘Overview’ on this topic, it’s working on mimicking empathy and goes on to say, AI’s creativity is systematic and consumer-driven, while human creativity is often impulsive and self-driven. Good. To. Know.
As a professional photographer, the skill I value most is my ability to make you feel at ease in front of the camera, bringing out genuine expressions that truly represent your personality. While AI can create a perfect smile, it may miss the subtle nuances that make you, well, you. A professional photographer excels at capturing micro-expressions and natural poses that convey confidence and approachability.
The Ethical Dilemma: Real vs. Artificial
It's crucial to consider the ethical implications of using AI-generated images for professional purposes. Is it misleading to use an AI headshot that may not perfectly represent your actual appearance? I recently had a client, Sandy, who started a new coaching business in 2024. She said, “Projecting a professional image, demonstrating authenticity, building trust are critical. I knew my AI photo wasn’t going to cut it anymore. My daughter was the one who pointed out that she could tell it was an AI generated image and that my eyes just looked strange. Wow!”
Food for thought: How would you feel if you discovered a colleague's profile picture was AI-generated? Would it change your perception of them?
Counting the Cost: Pixels vs. Paychecks
Let's talk numbers. Professional portrait sessions can range from $100 to $1000+, depending on the photographer's expertise and the package you choose. In contrast, AI-generated headshots can cost as little as $5-$20 per image, with some services offering unlimited generations for a monthly fee.
The cost savings of AI headshots could be a game-changer. However, larger corporations might prioritize the personalized touch and consistency of professional photography for their executive team.
Ultimately, I wanted to do my own research. After a few general questions about hair color and age, the AI generator asked me to upload a minimum of 6 good selfies from the waist up. Sandy told me she had uploaded over 40 photos! As I scrolled through the thousands of photos on my phone, I could not find 6 images that fit the criteria. No sunglasses, not hats, no other people, etc, and I didn’t feel like paying the $40 bucks to satisfy my curiosity. I did however try the free, one image required option on Canva. See result below.
